Commerce students meet Education Minister
Representatives of commerce students met education minister
Bhanwarlal Meghwal on 7 April demanding that the National
Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) make commerce graduates eligible
for the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET). However,
the meeting had no substantial outcome. As per the NCTE guidelines, commerce graduates
are ineligible for TET as commerce subjects are not taught at the primary or elementary
level. "We approached the minister expecting some solution to our problem but the
minister expressed his helplessness. He has asked us to approach the NCTE," a student
said.
The students also staged a dharna outside Meghwal's residence in Civil Lines. According
to NCTE guidelines, only students who qualify TET conducted by various state governments
will be appointed as teachers after August 2010. "If commerce graduates can do B.Ed.
then why are they being debarred from teaching at primary level," said Lekhraj Gurjar,
one of the candidates who could not apply for TET.
