Premier Institutes Facilitating More Global Exposure

City students become frequent international flyers

For students of premier institutes in the city, trips to gain global exposure have become more frequent than ever.

International internships during the course of academic programmes have been a standard feature for students of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Now, overseas stints are becoming common for students of other institutes like National Institute of Design (NID), Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad (MICA) and Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT).
The academic year began a few months back at DAIICT. In this short period, six students have already visited Europe to take part in the Google Summer of Code 2011 (GSoC) internship. Another student of the institute, Nikhil Marathe, is preparing to intern with Mozilla Firefox in the US. In all the cases, the students are sponsored by host companies. A student of DAIICT, Ankur Singhal, said: Students are very interested in international exposure. Apart from opening up opportunities for jobs, such exposure also helps us in pursuing higher studies.

The number of students visiting foreign destinations through student-exchange programmes this year at MICA has almost doubled to around 15 students as compared to the previous year. Many students of the institute also want to take part in competitions and events that are held at foreign destinations. Two students of MICA have just returned from Seoul in South Korea. Jayati Somani and Nitin Mohan went there to attend an event called Harvard Conference on Asian and International Relations.
At NID, around 25 students visit countries like France, Germany and Australia every year. For the last four to five years, we have been increasing the number of MoUs with foreign institutes for students exchange, said NID registrar, Vijaya Deshmukh. This is done in tune with students increasing keenness to get experience from institutes in foreign countries.

The number of students visiting foreign destinations is the highest at IIM-A. While around 90 to 100 students of the institutes flagship programme visit various foreign destinations through students exchange programme, a large number of them also get offers for international internships from companies.
