The much awaited, much delayed CBSE Class 10 marks sheets
arrived in schools on Monday, 18th July 2011. While a few schools got them on Saturday,
most received them only on Sunday, nearly two months after results were declared.

"In many cases, grades have been upped. For example, if a student has scored 70%
in the written exam, the marks sheet shows 80%. We don't know the parameters on
which this was done. Teachers were asked to rate students based on certain parameters;
the school could have been instructed clearly as to what needed to be done, rather
than doing it unscientifically," said Manjula Raman, principal, Army Public School,
adding that now a lot of students who were in the 60% bracket, are getting 70%.
"This year has been quite chaotic because there are no indicators. It might improve
in the next year," she said.
"The upgradation has been done based on the candidate's performance in other areas.
This is not uncommon. It's just that this time because of the school-based exams
and board exams, it came to their knowledge. Otherwise, children do not get to know,
because it is done by the board," said M Srinivasan, principal of Gear Innovative
International School, who received them on Saturday.
"It's only when a student is falling into a lower-grade bracket by a mark or two
that the grades are upped based on the performance in other areas. In such a case,
it is also indicated by two star marks," said Yamuna Suryaprakash, coordinator at
Delhi Public School (DPS) South.
However, she said that the delay in the release of marks sheets has been quite an
issue. "Parents keep asking for marks sheets and scream at the receptionist irritated
with the delay. Until we received it, we had no idea when it would arrive," she
added.
The marks sheets include grades in the various areas.
CBSE made Class X board exams optional from 2011, as part of its Continuous
and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system, which had been introduced for Class IX
in 2009-10. After the CCE came into force for Class 10, the new report card has
two areas - scholastic and co-scholastic activities - in which students have been
assessed.
