Cooking has been an integral part of any family since the beginning of human settlement. Good and healthy food is liked by everyone. Mouth watering delicacies are prepared by traditional cooks on auspicious occasions like marriage, religious function, parties etc. In modern times, cooking has acquired a different meaning.
Catering management course is the study of different types of food preparation, marketing and planning different types of food service establishments and companies. Catering companies take private orders and serve food for specific functions and events like marriages, parties etc. They set up tables and buffets and supervise the preparing and serving of meals, snacks and drinks. Apart from fundamental cooking skills, Catering deals with ordering ingredients, marketing, quality control, training, staff management and cost control.

Eligibility: There are different categories of courses including short-term certificate courses, diploma courses and the degree courses. You can do a degree or a diploma certificate in food craft; food production; food and beverage service or bakery and confectionery. You have to be a 10 + 2 pass if you want to appear for any Hotel and Catering Management course. If you want to appear for Institutes under NCHMCT, then the eligibility criteria is 10+2 and you also have to clear the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE).

Career Options: Course in catering management opens up a variety of career options which can be very challenging and interesting. One can find job in hotels/ restaurants, airlines catering, railway catering, army catering, food processing companies, confectioneries, theme restaurants, malls, base kitchens, private hospitals, cruise liners, corporate catering etc. and the salaries are whopping. You can also become a food writer after gaining considerable experience or you can become a cooking teacher. And, of course, you can become an entrepreneur by setting up your own business. With Indian food becoming a craze overseas, the demand for Indian chefs is fast on the rise. The UK and the Middle East itself is home to a large number of restaurants specializing in Indian food.
People are travelling more frequently now and are aware of different types of cuisine. 5-6 restaurants are being run in most five star hotels. Large hotels have kitchen staff numbering more than 100. Many economy hotels also employ chefs. There are plenty of job opportunities in this sector.
Catering management graduates can find job opportunities in managing restaurants, bars and other outlets in hotels, resorts or cruise liners. They can also get a job with catering services providers running catering operations in organizations such as hospitals, schools and higher education institutions etc.

Catering and hotelier jobs are fast emerging as an interesting and well-paid career option. In today’s age cooking is not considered an everyday chore. Dining out has become a style statement.
Cooking is developing as an art and craft and there is a lot of competition in this field. The Industry is growing by leaps and bounds creating more demand for chefs and professional cooks. An increasing number of catering managers are needed for jobs in the industry, schools and colleges, the health service and the armed forces. With the right experience behind them, many catering managers start their own contract catering businesses. There is a lot of scope for catering in the U.K. and South East Asia.
India catering industry has maintained the growth rate of 15 to 20% and the Rs. 15,000 crore industries has not seen any negative impact of slowdown. Earlier, family members used to take care of catering services during any social event. The trend has changed in the last five year. People tend to avail catering services for their social functions, especially in marriages, so that everyone can enjoy the event. People are now availing catering services for 50 to 100 people events. There has been no significant impact of slowdown on the business.

Remuneration: In India, cooking changes from place to place and therefore the taste also changes. Culture determines the food habits of the people, so one should be adaptable to the changing social order and food habits of people. Besides, as a chef, one must keep oneself abreast of the latest techniques of cooking. Sky is the only limit for the person who works sincerely and passionately in this field. Even though the pay scale may vary from place to place, the difference is not much. As a trainee chef, one can earn Rs. 10000 to Rs. 15000 per month. As one gains experience of around ten years, one can draw a salary of Rs.40000 to Rs. 50000 in a reputed hotel. When one reaches to the top and becomes an executive chef, one’s salary can be anything between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh per month.
