CAT registration touches 2.05L mark

Aspirants to top B-schools in India has seen a marginal rise this year, with IIM's data suggesting that around 2.05 lakh students have registered for CAT this year.

As the registration of Common Admission Test (CAT 2011) ended on October 4, the data released by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) on Thursday claims that around 2.06 lakh CAT vouchers were sold till the sale came to an on October 1. The total number of aspirants for CAT 2010 was around 2.04 lakh. However, when it comes to Amdavadi aspirants, the case is reverse as this year lesser number of registrations was recorded from city centre. While CAT 2010 saw 7,500 registrations, this year only 6,700 applications were received. Experts hint that the reason for minimal drop may be the reduction in number of registration centres in Gujarat - from three last year to only one in Ahmedabad alone this time.

Interestingly, of the vouchers sold, data reveals that male students have dominated the registration with around 73% of the total registered candidates are male and only 27% are female. Besides, it also reveals that most of the aspirants belong to New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune. The data was released by the IIMs and Prometric, IIMs partner in developing and delivering CAT-2011. Is the marginal rise in the CAT 2011 registration an indicator to dwindling student interest in management career or has it reached a stagnant point? While the education experts believe that management is losing its charm as a viable career option, IIMs pooh the theory.

Talking about the registration process, IIM-Calcutta faculty and CAT 2011 convenor Prof Janakiraman Moorthy said, "The registration process has ended smoothly. The marginal increase in the number of registrations this year is a sign that management is still a sought-after career choice for young Indians." Managing Director, Prometric India Soumitra Roy said that next step for Prometric is to prepare and check all testing locations to ensure candidates have a smooth testing experience. He further suggested that candidates should familiarise themselves with the test day procedures by viewing the video that is available on the CAT website, as well as ensure they not only bring the right documents but also arrive punctually on the right day and at the right location for the exam.
