Varsity has been receiving complaints from parents, students studying in different
colleges
The Nashik based Maharashtra University of Health Sciences
(MUHS) has rejected the applications for renewal of affiliation of 75 colleges teaching
various disciplines of medical science.
The vice chancellor of MUHS, Dr Arun Jamkar, told reporters on Thursday 28th July
that the varsity has taken the step as these colleges failed to fulfill the criteria
for imparting medical education to students.
Jamkar said that all the 280 colleges affiliated to MUHS under various disciplines
of medical science have to seek renewal. These colleges have to fulfill the prescribed
criteria, including staff strength, course compliance, educational infrastructure
and facilities provided.
The immediate fallout of the MUHS move is that these colleges cannot take fresh
admissions. "Students seeking admissions should check the varsity
website
www.muhsnashik.com to ensure that their desired institute figures in
the list of affiliated colleges," Jamkar said.
"A committee appointed by the MUHS visits the colleges to examine whether the criteria
have been met or not. The panel then submits a report to the varsity, which is discussed
in the academic council before granting affiliation," he said.
According to him, the varsity had received many complaints from parents and students
studying in different colleges. "Moreover, the officer of the chancellor of the
varsity has been stressing on improving the quality of medical education. All these
factors were discussed at the academic council meeting, which decided to take a
policy decision on granting affiliation based on fulfillment of basic criteria,"
Jamkar said.
Initially, 122 colleges that failed to fulfill the criteria were given three months
time to make amends. "Of these, 47 colleges fulfilled the criteria and became eligible
for renewal of affiliation," Jamkar said.
The colleges whose affiliation were cancelled include five dental colleges, 10 Ayurveda
and Unani colleges, six homeopathy colleges, 11 physiotherapy colleges, four occupational
therapy colleges, 26 basic nursing colleges, 10 post-basic nursing colleges, and
three Bachelor in Audiology and Speech, Language Pathology (BASLP) colleges.
