Introduction
Every Council Department uses Computer to store and retrieve information. CAD/CAM
software is used by civil engineers to design the drawings for the buildings. In
the past, “draughtsmen” produced "technical drawings". Now, computer aided design
systems are the norm for creating overall designs or detailed drawings. CAD operators
are skilled users of information systems and do some of the more routine design
work as part of a design team. They work in drawing offices and support all the
local authority services. CAD/ CAM software is used for various Industrial Productions,
designs and manufacturing done on a large scale. CAD/CAM software usage has increased
eight folds in the last two years especially in the small and medium scale companies.
They give the client the required quality and updated service or products at a reasonable
price as this software is highly merited.
History
CAD history can be retraced back to the mathematician Euclid of Alexandria, who,
in his 350 B.C. treatise on mathematics "The Elements"
expounded many of the postulates and axioms that are the foundations of the Euclidian
geometry upon which today's CAD software systems are built. It was more than 2,300
years after Euclid that the first true CAD software, a very innovative system (although
of course primitive compared to today's CAD software) called
"Sketchpad" was developed by Ivan Sutherland as part oh his PhD thesis at
MIT in the early 1960s. Sketchpad was the world's first CAD software but the first
commercial CAM software system, a numerical control programming tool named PRONTO,
had already been developed in 1957 by Dr. Patrick J. Hanratty. For that reason it
is Dr. Hanratty who is most often referred to as "the father of CAD CAM".
Computer aided design is not only about making things attractive but also, as with
architecture, there are hard technical considerations to be borne in mind such as
safety and environmental issues, for example, which entail a great deal of research.
Shipbuilding, and aerospace industries, industrial and architectural design, prosthetics,
and many more. CAD is also widely used to produce computer animation for special
effects in movies, advertising, technical manuals. The modern ubiquity and power
of computers means that even perfume bottles and shampoo dispensers are designed
using techniques unheard of by shipbuilders of 1960s. Because of its enormous economic
importance, CAD has been a major driving force for research in computational geometry,
computer graphics (both hardware and software), and discrete differential geometry.
Current Market Scenario:
The Next Growth Frontier for India, an additional $40 billion in opportunities will
be created from the offshoring of engineering services for the Indian IT Industry
by 2020, which implies that the demand for qualified engineers and skilled professionals
will rise in the near future. Demand for CAD/CAM professionals who have specialized
knowledge of a domain will grow. To breed them, Indian industries need to invest
in infrastructure, academics, and the workforce now to reap the benefits by 2020.
Be it the consumer electronics, aeronautical, automotive or any other industry where
CAD/CAM/CAE tools are used, the demand for qualified professionals will always be
on the rise. The return over investment in this career option are rewarding, since
the offshoring of engineering services is already picking up.
Top Do you make the cut?
Physical Challenge:
CAD/CAM operators must have the ability to work in a team. Sometime they have to
work alone for long hours. CAD/CAM operator have to be aware of changing technologies.
Psychological challenge:
CAD operators must have an understanding of the logic of engineering drawing and
principles,
knowledge of the qualities of metals and other materials, knowledge of manufacturing
processes and construction methods, good communication skills, numeracy and IT skills,
the ability to work alone, using initiative in an organized way, an interest in
solving problems and finding practical solutions, good colour vision etc.
Career Options
CAD/CAM graduates can find jobs as Mechanical Engineers or as Civil Engineers. Other
Job responsibilities involved in CAD CAM are understanding the given designs details
by reading the Auto CAD drawing and after that prepare quotations and interact about
such designs with the vendors. CAD/CAM operators can easily find jobs in construction,
aerospace, railways, electronics, broadcasting and telecommunications Industry.
There will be a lot of demand for CAD/CAM engineers in the future. Foreign companies
are looking at India as a manufacturing hub. They need CAD/CAM engineers and technicians
who will work according to the companies methods.
Some companies in the CAD/CAM field are:
- AABSyS Information Technology
- Advance Computer Services
- Cadem Technologies
- Fedsoft
- IDS Infotech
- Sound Stream Studios
Top Remuneration & Lifestyle
As a trainee designer can expect to start with remuneration as low as Rs 1 lakh
to 3 lakh per annum, depending upon organisation and industry. It takes roughly
one to three years to advance to the next level. As a senior designer and engineer
the remuneration is between Rs 3 to 5 lakh per annum. It takes experience of three
to five years to advance to the next level. As a Design Lead, or Lead Designer or
Engineer remuneration is between Rs 5 and 7 lakh per annum. As a project manager
or Project Lead (Design or Engineering) the Remuneration ranges from Rs 7 to 10
lakh per annum. As a design / engineering director the decision of selecting a CAD
technology and the tools to be used for the projects is taken by the Design/Engineering
Director. The Remuneration would be more than Rs 10 lakh per annum.
