Yale University president to step down
208 views

Richard C. Levin, president of the Yale University announced that he will step down at the end of the current academic year, after 20 years of service as the university’s president. He has served his institution longer than any other president currently in the Ivy League or the 61-member Association of American Universities.
Under Levin’s presidency since, the university has advanced schools and academic programmes and strengthened its science, engineering and medicine; built partnerships with the City of New Haven to create a new model for how universities can lead citizens of their host communities; supported a dramatic expansion of its international activities; and transformed its campus with the largest building and renovation programme since the 1930s. Levin is also credited to major initiatives in the areas of sustainability and the arts, with comparable success and impact. One of his earliest priorities was to transform Yale’s historically difficult relationship with its labour unions.

In recent years, Levin also made advancing Yale’s connections to India a priority of his administration. He travelled to India five times between 2005 and 2011, and during his November 2008 visit, he announced the launch of the Yale India Initiative, stating, we commit ourselves to the goal that India will have a permanent and prominent place in the teaching, scholarship, and the life of the institution. Decades from now, as India continues it’s economic, political, and social ascendancy, the commitments that Yale had made today will ensure that our students and faculty have a richer and deeper understanding, and will contribute to strengthening the relationship between the world’s two largest democracies.
Over the last five years, Yale committed significant financial resources to position itself among the world’s pre-eminent institutions for the study of and engagement with India and South Asia.
