IIMA gives new courses a sporting chance

Industry demand has persuaded Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad to introduce seven elective courses for its students. These courses include sports marketing, real estate management, coaching and counselling skills for team and leadership effectiveness, media investment management among others. The courses are aimed at giving students a plethora of options and opportunities once they pass out of the institute. IIMA Director Samir Barua, said, Consumer marketing is related to the consumer while sport marketing is rooted in the fan. There is a fundamental difference between a consumer and a sports fan. Sport marketing wins when it benefits fans, players, clubs, leagues, associations/boards and sponsors.

The course is designed in a way to allow marketers understand how to do that. Interestingly, understanding the strong need for a course that will cater to mentoring skills and counselling of the students as future leaders, the institute has also tailored a course on Coaching and Counselling Skills for Team & Leadership Effectiveness (CASTLE).The course will introduce the student to concepts, approaches, attitudes and the skills needed for successful coaching, counselling and mentoring in the organisational context, Barua added. The faculty of the institute is of the opinion that real estate contributes to 5 per cent of the national GDP and is the second largest employment generating sector.

Hence a course in real estate management will add to the students career prospects. Barua added, the primary purpose of a course in real estate management is to enable participants to appreciate the huge opportunities in this industry and motivate them to take up challenging assignments in the industry. The interest aroused by social media among students has prompted the institute to come up with a course on Media investment management. The course is designed in a way that it will give students hands on experience on media terms and management. Innovation is every where.

The course on Marketing Management in the World of High Technology and Innovation will cover areas such as types of innovations and its implications for the overall business and marketing in particular, role of ecosystem and challenges taking new innovations to success and future of hi-tech marketing, sources said. The course on Monetary Theory and Policy builds on the first year macro-economics and economic policy course and covers select topics in monetary theory. Strategy, Structure, People and Outcome (SSPO) course is aimed to develop an insight on how managers could gain competitive edge and output through appropriate human resources management practices and organisational design.
