Students will soon be able to apply for re-evaluation online across universities in the state. They will be able to check their results on their cell phones, too. Also, in future, several examinations will be decentralised and A-rated colleges will be allowed to conduct their own exams. Universities will also explore the option of holding online exams for certain courses. If suggestions mooted by an expert panel are anything to go by, the universities across the state will see a major overhaul in the exam process. For the first time, a state government panel has uploaded their recommendations on a social networking site to reach out to as many students as possible.
The 19-member examination reform panel was set up by the Maharashtra government a couple of months ago following a series of paper leaks. The panel has called for suggestions from stakeholders across the state. The minutes have the recommendations made by the panel members, who will be modified as per suggestions made by the stakeholders and a draft report will be submitted on September 15, which will also be open to suggestions. The suggestions include having online exams for professional courses, to grading colleges as per their academic strength. An official from a state university, who attended the meeting, said, social networking sites were massively used for paper leaks in the last exam session. We are putting it to use for a positive output. We managed to get more than 40 responses within hours of uploading the recommendations. We are hoping to reach out to as many students as possible within a short period. A senior member of the panel also pointed out in one of the meetings that universities can share good practices with each other and need not wait for the governments’ directions. It was unanimously decided in the meeting that all universities will implement online examinations for internal exams or a part of external examinations on a pilot basis in certain courses. Citing examples of Symbiosis and Pune University, it was also observed that varsities should explore the option of conducting online exams.
Blueprint for Revamp
Universities should also be asked to digitise mark sheets and degree certificates so that the industry should be able to verify their degrees online and it will also help in reducing malpractices in producing fake certificates.
Online Delivery of the question papers
Students from every university should be registered online using information and communication technology. Question banks should be developed & question sets changed every year. CCTVs and biometric system should be set up at examination strong room.
