The State Minority Department is examining the possibility of rectifying Government Resolution (GR) and brings all the aided minority schools under the gamut of reservation of the quota for minority schools. The department feels that the GR issued three years ago was misinterpreted by the minority institutions.
After the minority institutions referring to the high court ruling claimed that the state government had no right to take action against unaided schools for admission issues, the department decided to examine the provisions of its resolution. The high court, in 2008, had directed the state government that it cannot interfere in the admission process of unaided minority schools. However, the government while issuing the GR did not specify that the ruling was applicable only to unaided schools. "We are examining the possibility of re-issuing the GR, specifying that aided schools will have to follow the reservation norms," said Arif Naseem Khan, minority’s welfare minister. He convened a meeting of the officials from school education and minorities department after the issue of reservation of the minority quota in schools became a hot topic. The department had contemplated action against schools not following the quota norms two days ago. An official from the department clarified that though the high court has restrained the department from interfering in the admission process, it has right to seek explanation for other irregularities. "The action against a school in South Mumbai two months ago was for the irregularities on other fronts. The parents had complained about other violations. The department has right to take action for these discrepancies," the official said. The official said that the department will also think of implementing its decision of passing on vacant seats to other minority communities if that particular community failed to provide the required number of students.
