Going against the state government's decision, the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board (AMSB) may not include Hindi and Urdu medium classes of Std VIII in primary education. The reason cited for this decision is the primary education department's inability to conduct Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) in any other medium than Gujarati medium. Although the school board officials are capable and willing to implement the new system, they are following the government's dictate.
The Ahmedabad Municipal School Board, an education arm of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) provides primary education in Hindi, Urdu, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and English mediums, apart from Gujarati. The school board has decided to include classes of Std VIII of all these mediums in primary education as per government's decision.
However, the primary education department has not been efficient in conducting the TET for recruiting teachers for mediums other than Gujarati. This will affect 5,200 students as the school board will thus not recruit the desired teachers. The school board had informed the parents of the students who had passed out of Std VII about the inclusion of Std VIII in primary education and did not issue the school leaving certificates. However, the school board is now issuing school leaving certifications to the students passing out from Std VII to Std VIII. The school board was to include Std VIII of all the mediums in 225 schools in the city, which has now been reduced to 187 Gujarati medium schools following the primary education department's decision, said SK Langa, deputy municipal commissioner of AMSB.
As the opposition in the AMC is creating pressure for the same, so the school board management is willing to include Std VII in mediums other than Gujarati medium in primary education. "We have facilities and are capable of implementing the new system. We have also submitted our representation to allow us to include Std VIII in primary education as a special case," said Langa. He added that they will follow the state government's decision in this regard. However, there is least possibility of the school board getting the nod from the state government for the same, said sources in the school board. "We need more time for creating facilities to accommodate such a large number of students," said sources.
