Smriti Kharb (17) braved crippling pain caused by a sudden attack of acute appendicitis during the course of her board examinations to score 84.4%. On the eve of the last paper, Economics, Smriti, a student of Rajhans Vidyalaya at Andheri (W) began experiencing intense abdominal pain. At first she tried to ignore it and continue with her revision, but when the pain intensified her family immediately sought medical aid.
After the test results were analyzed, I was told that I was suffering from acute appendicitis. The doctors gave me heavy doses of antibiotics so that I could sit through the paper, said Smriti. The commerce student said she would not have been able to give the exam if it hadn’t been for the support of her school teachers and invigilators I did not get any extra time, but the teachers kept a constant watch on me. They had my medicines with them and would come to give me my doses at regular intervals, said Smriti. My parents are so happy right now. They cannot believe that I scored so well despite my illness. Her school principal Deepshikha Srivastava feels that Smriti could have scored a higher percentage had it not been for the medical emergency. She has done exceptionally well in all the other subjects. Had she scored well in the last paper too, she would have got more than 90%. Smriti is preparing for the CPT exam and hopes to do a B.Com.
