Barkatullah University (BU) will conduct its first ever entrance test for Ph.D by the end of July. Being mandatory under the commission guidelines, for the last two years, the varsity failed to follow the UGC norms to conduct the entrance test. "The test will be held by the end of next month. An advertisement will soon be released with details of the test," Prof Nisha Dubey vice-chancellor BU, told TOI.
Entrance exam for admission in PhD course became mandatory after the University Grants Commission (UGC) 2009 rule came into existence. The degrees wouldn't stand valid in case of the non-execution of the rule. For two years from 2009 to 2011, BU conducted Research Degree Committees (RDC) in various subjects of PhD and approved the synopsis of applicants. Students objected to the RDC and sought clarification from the vice-chancellor about the authenticity of their degrees. It happened only after December 22, 2011 when the Governor Ram Naresh Yadav imposed a compulsion on the varsity to conduct entrance tests that the BU has come to this conclusion. The BU later formed a committee in January this year to look into the issue and a report was submitted regarding the implementation of the UGC rule, sources maintained. President, Barkatullah University Teachers Association (BUTA), Prof H. S. Yadav said, "It is good that BU authorities have finally decided to conduct the entrance test."
