Error in totaling of HSC exam marks

Teachers assessing the HSC science papers may be weak in addition after all. Ever since the re-assessment of answer papers started from June 12, a good 144 students have their marks increased by one to ten. Significantly here, in 90-odd cases, the error was in totaling where the assessing teacher had wrongly added up the marks in the Mathematics paper. In many cases, the teachers had completely forgotten taking into account the marks given in one or two question which made a world of difference to the students merit probability.

Error in totaling of HSC exam marks

An HSC (science) student who was expecting 90 marks but had got 85 marks in Chemistry paper had applied for re-assessment. He was overjoyed when the re-evaluation revealed that the teachers erred in adding up the marks and he had indeed scored 90 marks. This will brighten my prospects in getting into a good professional college, said the ecstatic boy. Another student got an increase of two marks. He had scored 70 marks, but after re-assessment it was found that the teacher had forgotten to correct two questions. His current score in Math is 72. It may be just two marks, but it means going up the merit list by a couple of notches. I am glad I opted for re-assessment, the student said.

Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board chairman R. R. Varsani said that 12,000 students have applied for re-assessment. In all, 24,000-odd answer papers will be re-examined as many students have applied for re-evaluation of multiple subject papers. Each day, 1,600 students are allowed to see their answer papers. Varsani said that the board will give a CD of corrected marks to the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) so that the changes can be made in the final merit list. The ACPC is scheduled to release the final merit list on June 28. This is being done to ensure that the students who have benefitted from re-assessment also get their due in the merit list and resultant admission in professional courses.
