Most students opt for arts and commerce in Class XI instead of science as they feel that the science syllabus in Class XII is too vast, which will not allow them to perform well in the higher secondary examination. UC Das, secretary of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) said, "2,45,000 students enrolled for higher secondary last year, out of which only 19,776 opted for science and the rest opted for the arts and commerce stream. This is not a new trend as majority of students opt for arts or commerce in class XI even if they perform well in Maths and Science in the HSLC exams."
Besides the government institutes, most private colleges offer only arts and commerce. There are very few science colleges here. But, the authorities say that it's not the lack of institutes, but lack of willingness on the part of students to study science. "Even if the student performs well in science and mathematics in the Class X exams, they think twice before opting for science in the higher secondary level. It would be wrong to say that there is less institutes offering science; the truth is that a lot of seats remain vacant in the science stream in Class XII," he said.
Niroda Devi, principal of Cotton College said, "The science syllabus in the higher secondary level is vast. Some students cannot cope up with the vast course and cannot perform as per their expectations. A student might score good marks in Mathematics and Science in the HSLC exams as the class X course is very limited. Students can perform well in examinations even if his concept is not very clear, but he cannot get away with memorizing in the higher secondary level." "Moreover, in the school level, one science teacher teaches Physics, Chemistry and Biology. But, the higher secondary level science is very different. Arts and commerce are gaining popularity these days as they too have a vast career option," she added.
