Nagpur: No Commerce in std XI
202 views

Students pursuing class X examination across various boards and aspiring to take admission to commerce stream in junior colleges run by the Maharashtra government have a reason to cheer. Now, they don't have to go through mad scramble for admission as the state education department in Nagpur has decided to exclude commerce faculty admissions from centralized admission process (CAP) from this year.

Nagpur: No Commerce in std XI

"The decision was taken by the committee that conducts CAP in view of extremely poor response to the faculty," deputy director of education Mahesh Karajgaonkar confirmed to TOI. He said that since last couple of years the number of students applying for commerce admissions was on decline while the seats were increasing. "The demand-supply gap was uneven as after admissions many seats used to remain vacant in a majority of colleges," he said, adding that the move would significantly reduce the burden on his department officials and lengthy admission process would be curtailed to some extent.

Chairman of CAP committee Baban Taywade stated that it would be for the first time in 11 years when centralized admissions started in 2000 that the commerce stream was being dropped from the process. "Earlier, arts faculty was dropped for similar reason after the very first year. However, somewhere in 2005, the entire CAP was dropped due to unknown reasons and admissions were made by students on their own," he said. Officials of the education department disclosed that last year, about 13,110 commerce seats were up for grabs but only 8,000 students took admission. Over 5,000 seats remained vacant.

They said that students aiming to get admission to commerce would be saved from various hassles like purchasing and filling up lengthy forms, participating in the long admission process and then anxiously waiting for provisional/final merit list to get published. On the flip side, they will have to hop from one college to another for collecting forms and a lot of money and time would be wasted in the process. Giving details about science faculty, officials said that a total of 15,660 seats were available in junior colleges in the city. This was apart from 3,477 bifocal seats which were in demand from students. A majority of students, especially aspiring for engineering sector, aims to get a seat in bifocal courses as they don't have to appear for an additional language subject.

No online admissions yet:
Officials said online admissions would not be conducted this year too as it happened in Mumbai and Pune due to severe shortage of manpower and equipment. They however hoped that preparations to conduct online admissions were in progress and hopefully, by next academic session, the students would have a choice to fill forms online.
