FYJC admission without marksheet

Good news, junior college aspirants. If the thought of the two-month-long gruelling admission process has been giving you nightmares, the state government is going to help you de-stress a wee bit. Secondary school certificate (SSC) students seeking to join junior colleges and industrial training institutes and polytechnic institutes, or to do diploma courses in the state will no longer have to wait for their original marksheets to arrive to get started with the admission process.

Instead, they can now submit printouts of the online marksheets. Even higher secondary certificate (HSC) students can make use of such a facility for admission to D.Ed and other courses. Every year, students have had to wait for their original marksheets to apply for junior colleges. It takes eight to 10 days from the announcement of results for marksheets to reach schools and junior colleges.

The Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education (MSBSHE) had sent a proposal to accept online marksheets during the admission process to the school education department a month ago. According to top officials from the education department, the proposal was given the green light on March 30th. “A circular in this regard has already been sent to deputy directors of school education in all divisions, the directorate of vocational education and training, and the directorate of technical education,” said an official.

Sarjerao Jadhav, chairperson of MSBSHE, said, “The period (between board examinations and college admissions) is too stressful for students, who need to spend nearly two months on the FYJC (first-year junior college) admission process. As per the new directive, the admission process can begin soon after the results are announced, as marks are uploaded online on the same day. This will give lakhs of students a breather and will also cut down eight to 10 days of the admission process.” The original marksheets, though, will have to be submitted before admissions are finalised. “Students will have to present their marksheets, which will arrive within eight to 10 days of the announcement of results,” clarified Jadhav.

Asked why such a facility has not been extended to senior college aspirants as well, Jadhav said, “The university of must come forward to approve this rule so that the admission process in senior colleges can be shrunk as well.” Earlier, the education department had allowed admissions for bifocal courses to be held offline to cut short the entrance procedure by three weeks. An FYJC student of Ruia College welcomed the decision, “Due to the lengthy procedure, our FYJC classes could start only in the second week of August and then, we had to finish the syllabus in seven months. I hope that the new rules will help to start the academic year early.”
