The 'Jalmatri yatra 2012' organised by Jal Dindi Pratishthan and College of Engineering Pune Boat Club will be held on April 5. The yatra was begun to create awareness among citizens on water pollution. This year activities like tree plantation, gathering information on installation of sewage treatment plants and their present capacity, providing bins where there are no nirmalaya kalash, collection of plastic, measurement of water samples will be taken up.
Around 100 individuals, majority of them students, will be participating in the event. Jayesh Zope, a student of College of Engineering, Pune who is participating in the Yatra, said, "In this day-long event, we will follow the Mutha river from Vitthalwadi to Sangam bridge. Participants will take the boat and others will walk down the course of the river and collect water samples from the river, which will be tested at the college lab," he said. The Yatra spreads the message of judicious use of water, no plastics and planting more trees. "We will plant around 300 saplings along the river," he said. The alumni association of the college has been funding the Yatra since the inception and students, too, contribute.
