To make textbooks available in local languages across a range of subjects, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has set up an Indian language centre in higher education on its Mumbai campus. The aim is to help students who are not well-versed with the English. “Textbooks and other reading materials are usually available in English. But there are many students who are not familiar with English. To ensure that the language barrier does not become an impediment for any student, we want to make textbooks and reference books available in various local languages,” said TISS Director S Parasuraman.
Accordingly, TISS plans to work with universities and institutes across the country for the project. The focus will be on converting curriculum in local languages, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. “We will look at a range of subjects, which will include Science, Maths and Social Sciences among others,” he said. Meanwhile, another centre, which is being set up at the institute’s Mumbai campus, will focus on higher education. Besides conducting research relevant to all stakeholders, building administrative capacities across institutes of higher education will be a primary objective of the centre. “Vice-chancellors or pro-vice chancellors are academicians and not trained managers. Hence, they often take a year and more to grasp the nuances of running a university. Some are quick to learn, but most people may not be in a position to learn so fast. Also, their terms are not very long. It thus becomes crucial that they are trained for such an important position. Accordingly, the TISS higher education centre will look at creating strong training programmes for administrators of universities and other institutes of higher education. We will look at creating independent capacities so that the universities can be managed more efficiently,” said a faculty member.
