Dual degree prog at Allahabad Univ

The Centre for Globalization and Development Studies, Allahabad University would launch a new dual degree course in the academic session 2012-13. The course would offer Bachelor-cum-D.Phil degree in Globalization and Development Studies. It would deal with research phenomena and processes of globalization and development with inter-disciplinary approaches. It is a professional integrated programme first of its kind in the country.

Detailing on the programme, centre coordinator Prof V. P. Singh said that the overall duration of the programme of study of this course is seven years; however, the programme also has a provision to exit earlier. First: after completion of four years with a Bachelor's Degree (Honours) and second, after completion of five years with a Master's degree. Those who attain CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Assessment) of 6 point i.e. 60 %, and above would have a choice to enroll directly in D.Phil programme of 2 years.

The programme is innovative, keeping in mind the requirements of the job market for the students in the era of globalization and offers specialization in three upcoming areas, namely, rural development, urban development and corporate social responsibility, said the coordinator. The thrust of the programme is to nurture among the students basic knowledge of various disciplines required for a development practitioner, with specialized and advanced knowledge as well as performance skills in the field of globalization and development studies.

"Being the first in the country to initiate such a course, we are starting with an intake of 20 students for the maiden course for which admission would be done through Common Entrance Test for Under Graduation, conducted by AU. However, those who secure more than 55% marks in the entrance test would be considered for admission in this programme, provided they have filled the option for this programme in the application form", said Prof Singh. The Center is also starting Master in Development Studies for which there are 20 seats, he added.

The objective of this programme is to develop basic understanding of the theoretical and methodological perspectives about Globalization and development. The programme will endeavor various aspects of processes of globalization as well as would focus on nuanced analysis of development paths and models. The programme would also enable students to have an exposure to process of social science research through project work. Moreover, the programme focuses on three major fields of specialization namely, development, globalization and rural societies; urban planning and development and corporate, governance and development.

The programme also has three specialized modules wherein each consisting of a set of three courses enabling the students to acquire further specialized knowledge in different fields of development studies, he added. Likewise, for D.Phil programme in Globalization and Development Studies, the duration is of a minimum of two years with one semester (six months) of compulsory course work. The candidates who have qualified Combined Research Entrance Test (CRET), conducted by AU, would be eligible for admission after successfully appearing in the Viva-voce conducted by the Centre itself.

However, those who have cleared UGC JRF-NET examination would be exempted only from the written test of CRET but they need to apply through CRET Application Form and after successfully appearing in viva-voce they would be considered for admission in the D. Phil program of the Centre, he said. Meanwhile, Allahabad University Registrar Prof J. N. Mishra has said that though the university will remain closed on April 5 and 6, undergraduate and postgraduate scheduled for these two days will be held as per the announced programme. AU employees and teachers, who have been assigned examination duties on these two days, should report on time. A viva voce of B. A. III Sanskrit will be held in the department on May 5, 6 and 7 between 8 AM and 5 PM. For further details, students are requested to contact the department.
