The process for issuance of eligibility certificate at the University of Pune (UoP) is all set to go online from academic year (AY) 2012-13. The eligiblity certificate is a key document especially for students from outside the UoP system, seeking admission to various degree and postgraduate courses offered by the university. Usually, the university grants a provisional admission to such students and the latter have to apply for eligiblity certificate two to three months within their provisional admission date, as prescribed for the relevant course.
The office of the board of college and university development (BCUD) goes through all the key documents like mark sheet, degree certificate, transfer certificate equivalence of course content etc., before issuing the eligibility certificate to the concerned student. "An admission is not confirmed unless a student gets the eligibility certificate. In the absence of such certificate, the student is also now allowed to appear for the university exams," a BCUD official told TOI on Monday, 9th July, 2012.
As of now, the eligibility certificate process is being conducted manually at the affiliated colleges and the on-campus postgraduate departments, which forward the documents to the BCUD office, he said. "The submission of application process is held between August and October every year and the issuance of eligibility starts thereafter," he added. The process usually takes a prolonged time due to various factors including limited staff strength and excessive number of applications. The UoP has nearly 625 affiliated colleges and 300 recognised institutions under its belt, making it the largest state universities in Maharashtra.
"The online system will negate all these issues as students will get their eligibility certificate within a prescribed time and in an efficient and transparent process," the official said. Already, the university has lined up a slew of training sessions and workshops for its affiliated colleges and on-campus postgraduate departments for implementation of the new system. These training and workshop events are to be held from 10th July 10 to 13th July at different locations across the UoP area of Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts.
The online eligibility initiative forms part of the UoP's larger exercise of introducing various student-friendly online services for issuance of key documents and certificate and effecting admissions. For instance, the process for enrolment of external students; postgraduate admissions; issuance of migration certificate; affiliation of colleges; submission of research proposals; admissions to foreign students etc. have already gone online. Similarly, the varsity has introduced online element in the conduct of examinations for certain subjects in the engineering faculty as well as the entrance test for Ph.D enrolment.
