The right step forward : Education Times and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidya Pratishthan Society organised Education and Career Counselling Seminar 2012 on July 4. More than 200 parents and students attended the seminar and got insights from industry experts on career opportunities in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Optometry and Visual Science, Physiotherapy and Hotel Management and Catering Technology Education Times and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidya Pratishthan Society organised Education and Career Counselling Seminar 2012'on July 4 at Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Engineering and Technology (DYPIET), Pimpri, Pune. Dr. R K Jain, Principal, DYPIET highlighted the vision and mission of Dr. P. D. Patil, Chairman, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidya Pratishthan Society.

He further informed that the idea of the seminar was initiated and executed by Smita Jadhav, Executive Director, IDL, Dr. D. Y. Patil University, Pune. Prof. Alka Jadhav proposed a vote of thanks at the end of inauguration session. Registrar Pramod Patil extended his full support in organising the event. More than 200 parents and students attended the counselling session. Industry experts from the fields of Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Optometry and Visual Science, Physiotherapy and Hotel Management and Catering Technology gave the audience an insight on the career opportunities in the respective sectors.

Y. Patil Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Tathawade, Pune, Dr. Tushar J. Palekar, Principal, Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy, Veshal Madan, Director, Dr. D. Engineering
An interdisciplinary approach in education is the need of the hour in this field.
Eligibility: Higher Secondary Examination with minimum 50% aggregate in physics, chemistry and mathematics in one attempt only
Term: Four Years
Opportunities: Mechanical, Computer, Information Technology, Instrumentation and control, Electronic and Telecommunication, Production and Civil Engineering.
Pharmacy
Pharmacy is a mix of technical and health education. The pharma industry in India is growing at a rate of 9% and above.
Diploma in Pharmacy:
Duration: Two years
Eligibility: Higher Secondary Examination or equivalent from a recognized Board with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Bachelor of Pharmacy:
Duration: Four years
Eligibility: Higher Secondary exam with Physics, Chemistry and Biology /Mathematics. In addition to that, he/she should have secured minimum 50% marks in the above subjects.
Opportunities: Regulatory affairs, clinical research, formulation developments, quality assurance and other emerging areas in the pharma industry Management MBA can be termed as Managing Business and Administration. Managers play an important role in any industry. Today, various specialisations are available.
Eligibility: Graduate
Term: Two years
Opportunities: Human resource management, operations management, strategic management, international management and more.
Hotel Management and Catering Technology
With the booming tourism industry in India, there is a huge demand for hotel industry and skilled man-power at managerial levels in hotels and hospitality business.
Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT): (Affiliated to University of Pune and Approved by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi)
Duration: Four years full time (8 semesters)
Eligibility: Candidate should have passed the HSC exam of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or equivalent exam in Science/Home Science Commerce / Arts/MCVC with English as one of the subjects and secured minimum 50% marks in aggregate (45% marks in aggregate for backward class category candidates belonging to Maharashtra State only).Candidate should have appeared for MAH/HM /CET securing a non-zero score.

Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Studies (B.Sc HS): (Affiliated to University of Pune and recognised by Govt. of Maharashtra)
Duration: Three years full time (6 semesters)
Eligibility: Candidate should have passed the HSC exam of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or equivalent exam in Science/Home Science Commerce / Arts/MCVC with English as one of the subject and secured minimum 45% marks in aggregate ( 40% marks in aggregate for backward class category candidates belonging to Maharashtra State only).
Opportunities: India is upcoming tourist destination and it is expected that this year about 60 million tourists will visit the country. Hence, there is a huge demand for hotel industry and need for skilled man-power at managerial level in hotels and hospitality business.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is a health profession concerned with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disease and disability through physical means or agents e.g. exercise, electrical equipments and an array of innovative treatment regimes.
Duration: Four and a half years
Qualification: HSC pass or any other examination equivalent to 10+2 HSC examination of any recognized Board/ University after 12 years of study (with English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology as subjects).Preferably minimum 50% marks in PCB
Opportunities: Ample job prospects in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, residential homes, private clinics etc. Physiotherapist can continue to develop their skills and expertise through further courses in areas such as sports injuries, pediatrics and mental illness
Optometry and Visual Science
Optometry is the visual science that deals with examination of the human eye for diseases, refractive errors, manufacturing and fitting of contact lenses, low vision aids, ortho optics (eye exercise) etc.
Bachelor of Optometry (B. Optom):
Duration: Four years degree course of Bachelor of Science in Clinical Optometry (three years of theory and one year of internship)
Eligibility: 10 + 2 qualification with 45% minimum marks in PCB/PCM group
Opportunities: Independent optometry clinic, consultant optometrist and contact lens specialist in Eye Hospitals, career as Lens Consultant and Executive Clinical Service Manager, Post Graduation Teaching and Research.
