Panjab University is losing out the brilliant and top rank holders, who took its entrance exams for the academic session 2012-2013. While its affiliated colleges may be advertising and highlighting "freeships and scholarships" to lure the best lot, PU is yet to decide how to retain the best of brains. Applicants, who are among top five rank holders across several departments, professional and even arts faculties, are turning towards other colleges and universities.
A case in point is the topper of PU's law entrance exam: Pitamber Yadav, who topped the B.Com, LLB entrance exam, results of which were declared a few days ago. "I scored 9.8 grade in Class X and 95% in Class XII in commerce stream. I have been a merit holder in all classes," said Pitamber, who was also selected for an international educational mission to Ton bridge School in the UK when he was in Lawrence School, Sanawar. However, such cases are not restricted to department of laws alone.
"Not just one, but top five students in the entrance merit list must be offered scholarships to retain them. If applicants are aware that they are being offered such incentives, they will work harder for it and it may also attract brighter lot," said Dinesh Kumar, chairperson of PU department of political science.
