E-Question papers, only for engg, B.Ed

The University of Mumbai may not be able to deliver all the question papers online after all. After five paper leaks last year, the university was planning to introduce online delivery of question papers for exams in future. However, this October, only engineering and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) papers might be delivered using the online mode. Question papers for arts, science and commerce might be sent to exam centres using traditional methods.

While work on engineering and B.Ed exams has already begun, the university is yet to take a decision on other streams. The number of commerce colleges is very high and many of them in the remote areas may not be connected via internet. Also, if we are sending them question papers in the online mode, and if their infrastructure is note quipped to download, print and distribute question papers in the stipulated time, it will put students in trouble, said a university official.

Colleges will also have to have taken more printouts and distribute them on time. Unlike engineering where each college has only 400-500 students, in commerce colleges, there are more than 1,000 students at some centres. Taking prints on such a huge scale might be difficult for the college’s machinery. At institutions like Thakur College, the number of students taking exam is over 1,000, said the official. He said the varsity is yet to take a decision on the system of sending question papers via web link or CD or email to be used for this October exam.

We are yet to figure out if a feasibility study can be done in this October exam, he said. The varsity is also planning to introduce the concept of lead colleges. Lead college scan help in the delivery of papers and provide for a joint conductor of exams who can ensure that question paper bundles are opened in their presence to avoid leaks. Pro-VC, Naresh Chandra, said the university is planning to introduce technology at various stages of the exam process.
