A major policy proposal will come up before M S Universitys (MSU) syndicate members on Tuesday, 31st July, 2012 as Gotri Medical College (GMC) has applied for getting affiliation from the university. GMC is managed by the Gujarat Medical Education Research Society (GMERS), a trust promoted by Gujarat government. It admits 150 student son self-financed models. It is worth mentioning here that although there are provisions of affiliation in MSUs handbook, the university in its history has never granted affiliation to any institute.
Forget about granting affiliation, MSU has not even entertained any proposal for affiliation. If the syndicate members give their nod to the proposal, GMC will become first institute of its kind affiliated to MSU. After syndicate clears the way to initiate the process of affiliation, the same will be placed before senate for its approval. Giving affiliation to any institute has remained one of the most contentious issues at MSU. In fact, one of the major reasons of opposition to the controversial Common Universities Act which the Gujarat government had proposed years back was the clause of affiliation as many feared that it would open flood gates damaging MSUs unique identity as a residential and unitary campus.
Interestingly, the proposal for affiliation from GMC has come at a time when a committee appointed by the MSU is already looking into the possible merger of GMC with the university. Earlier in June a special committee under convener ship of Prakash Shah had already made way for GMCs academic merger with the university. But during the last syndicate meeting, a second committee was appointed by syndicate members under convener ship of Parimal Vyas to study GMCs possible relationship with MSU.
