The state is planning to impose certain restrictions on the SSC schools that change their board to CBSE or ICSE. School education minister Rajendra Darda said on Wednesday 28th March, 2012, that the guidelines will be introduced in the next 10 days. The government also has formed a committee to look into the irregularities in terms of fees, donations and commercial exploitation of the school premises by the management.
Raising the issue of the plight of the south Mumbai school children, MLA Mangalprabhat Lodha, demanded action by the government for the exorbitant hike in fees. Naming schools such as New Era, Palm Beach and Hindi Vidya Bhavan in South Mumbai, Lodha said; in the assembly that the managements have increased fees by nearly 400%. He also alleged that some of them have not admitted new students for the last three years, and questioned whether this was because these schools were planning to shut down for good in the near future.
