Last year it was Chemistry and this year it is Maths that made HSC Science students cry. Students who appeared for their Maths exam on 13th March, Tuesday were in for a shock when they saw the question paper. It was a tricky question paper, which had very few questions directly from the textbook. Two questions of five marks each were not from course and one question, again of five marks, had a printing mistake. The majority of students were unable to attempt the whole paper and the average score in this subject is expected to be between 50-70 marks.
Suchita Vichare, a class XII student from St Xaviers Gandhinagar, said: Since the Biology paper was very easy, we were expecting the same in case of Maths, but this question paper came as a shock. I did attempt all questions, but then they were not from the textbook so I am a bit apprehensive about my score. Another student Deepesh Oatwani from Sakar School opined: Even as two questions were out of course, I did attempt all questions. And I am confident of scoring good marks. Yes, today’s paper was not for people who totally depend on textbooks.Maths teacher C. B. Pandey was of the view that the paper was tough for an average student. He said, It was not at all a scoring paper and very few students will score above 90 marks. Talking to TOI, Board chairman RRV Arsani said: We have got the paper reviewed by an expert and no question was out of course. The expert was of the view that 20 mark problems were from text book only, but the paper setter had just changed the weightage. Vasani added, The other subjects were very easy, so the students found Maths papers lightly tough.
