There is good news for post-graduates who fail to clear the mandatory National Eligibility Test, conducted by the UGC for appointment as faculty in degree colleges and universities. They can now appear for the State Eligibility Test that the state will conduct from April this year. The Osmania University will conduct SET twice a year and students who pass it will be eligible for appointment as faculty and will receive salaries according to UGC norms. The percentage of successful candidates appearing for NET is just two to three per cent in the state. Though the state government had abolished SET in 1998, it is reinstating it after 14 years. “NET is held only in English and Hindi. Thus, students from a Telugu medium background find it difficult to clear the NET. The advantage with SET is that students can take the test in Telugu. However, we will maintain standards along the lines of NET so that quality is not compromised,” said Prof. Satyanarayana, the Vice-Chancellor of the Osmania University.
Out of approximately 10,000 students from the state who appear for NET twice a year, less than 300 clear it. Students have been demanding that the government reinstate SET for quite some time. After several representations by the students, the government has agreed to reinstate SET and the OU has been entrusted with the responsibility to conduct it. The OU had sought UGC’s approval to reinstate SET. A UGC team will visit OU on 6th March, Tuesday before giving approval. The OU has established a separate office for SET at the Centre for Distance Education on the campus. The office houses the chambers of the member secretary and other staff members. OU will conduct SET twice a year. Those who clear it will be eligible for faculty posts in colleges.
