When Rakesh Sarang called up the helpline of SSC board, he was worried about the English paper scheduled on March 6th. But he was unable to tell the counsellor what exactly he was afraid of. Worse was the condition of Preeti Kankariya who could not even explain her problem to the counsellor. Chinmay Shinde knew what his problem was but was confused about the priority of his problems. These and many such calls were received by Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education appointed counsellors since the SSC examination began on 1st March, Thursday.
B.D. Garud, one of the counsellors, said, “Unlike Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) students, SSC students are confused and less confident. The problems are more or less same, but it is difficult for them to describe them properly. We spend a lot of time making them talk. We feel these students need one-on-one, face-to-face counselling and just telephonic advice is not really helpful for them. We have conveyed this to the board authorities." “Students from rural areas are calling up more compared to urban students. Most of them are boys who are confused regarding grammar section of the English paper." Ramesh Patil, another counsellor, said, “Some HSC students are worried about the paper which they found difficult and have lost confidence in writing other papers. Likewise, the science students have more awareness compared to other streams. Students have problems like not remembering what they have learnt and grammar. Hence, I have advised them to talk to their subject teacher if possible." S.J. Kulkarni who is a counsellor at Solapur centre, said, “I have noticed poor response from the students. So far, I have received only five to six calls from the students. People here are less aware of such help lines compared to their urban counterparts."
