Counseling for MBBS will begin on July 1 in Chennai with 547 seats less than the government expected. Several private medical colleges remain non-committal on putting their seats under the governments’ merit-based system. The states directorate of medical education, however, is hopeful of getting some seats from private colleges in the second phase.
The first phase of counseling will have 1,653 MBBS seats in 17 government medical colleges and 85 BDS seats in Madras Dental College, health minister V.S. Vijay said, releasing the rank list for 2011. Private medical and dental colleges affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University have been surrendering up to 60% of seats for admissions through the states single window system. Last year, eight medical colleges surrendered 547 seats. New colleges like Annapurna Medical College and Hospital in Salem and Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur have, in principle, agreed to surrender seats, but the directorate is yet to get confirmation.
