The state government's plans to add 350 MBBS seats in its colleges for academic year 2011 suffered a setback with the Medical Council of India not giving clearance for at least two city colleges.
The government wanted to increase the number of seats at the Madras Medical College and the Stanley Medical College by 100 each and at the Kilpauk Medical College by 50. It was also looking forward to 100 more seats at a new college in Sivaganga. Though the MCI cleared the decks for two private colleges in Tamil Nadu with 150 seats each, this may not mean much for students seeking admission through the single window system as the institutions are not obliged to share seats with the state government. The state health department on 13th June received official confirmation on permission for the Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital in Salem and the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur.
