At the beginning of the coming academic year in June; Puneites will have a new career opportunity to pursue. The Centre of Advanced Studies in Sanskrit (CASS) at the University of Pune (UoP) will be starting the country’s first course in translation studies. The two-year full-time course will be titled MA in Translation Theory and Applications. Ujjwala Jha, director of CASS, said; this course at our university will be the first course in translation studies in India. There is a need of an organised structure to carry out the translation work. This course is designed to serve that purpose. The course curriculum has already been passed by the UoP board of studies and the advertisement for applications will be issued soon. Confirming that the course will be started from this June, A.G. Chaskar, Dean of Faculty of Arts at UoP said, We passed the decision of starting the course in the academic council meeting today itself. Very soon, we will formally release the applications for admissions.
The unique feature of the course is that although under CASS, it will allow the students to carry out translation work in languages other than Sanskrit also. We invited scholars from across the country in August last year for a workshop on the course idea. They presented a lot of suggestions considering which the course has been designed, said V.N. Jha, the former director of CASS, who has designed the course curriculum. The course will accommodate 30 students and will consist of two projects other than 14 theory papers. One project will have a pre-decided text to be translated into a language fixed by the department. The second project will give the students an option of translation in their language of interest. We have communicated about this to the other language departments in the university. Their lecturers will work under us to teach as per the student’s choice of language, added Ujjwala Jha.
