Students who will be promoted to class X in 2012, will not be evaluated only on the basis of their performance in the board exams to be held in March 2013. They will be evaluated all through the year and given internal marks which will be included in their final result. This follows the decision of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) to introduce School Comprehensive Evaluation (SCE) system in class X to do away with learning and passing the matriculation exam by rote. Following the implementation of the SCE, school teachers will carry out formative and summative assessment of the students based on their effort to understand the subject beyond text-book.
Schools will also introduce five values and five life skills, and assess these areas as well, so that the students cultivate learning which helps them become better individuals, citizens and inculcate a strong character. Board will conduct exam of five main subjects including English, Gujarati, Social Studies, Math and Science and Technology. Each paper will be of 100 marks. 70 per cent of the marks obtained in each exam will be considered for final marking. Since the mandatory passing mark is 33 marks out of 100, the students will have to score 23 marks out of 70. Internal exams worth 200 marks will be conducted by school authorities and 30 percent of marks obtained will be considered for calculating final results. Schools will be required to submit these marks to the board. This will lead to overall development and education of students. “It will lessen the burden of learning by rote and help students to self-learn”, said chairman of GSHSEB R.R Varsani.
