University of Pune (UoP) vice-chancellor Wasudev N Gade announced here on Saturday, 21st July, 2012 that a new two-year masters programme in technology (M.Tech) will be started from academic year 2012-13. The UoP management council approved the introduction of this programme at its meeting held on Friday, 20th July 2012. "The course will be run by the university's department of technology, which is an independent self-supporting unit of the university," he said.
The UoP's technology department was carved out from the earlier department of engineering and technology, for running the industry-supported integrated M.Tech-Ph.D course, which was introduced last year. Gade said, "The new M.Tech programme will have a student intake of 30 seats and the study projects in the second year of the course will be sponsored by the university's industry partners." "We already have nearly 15 prominent industries, which are supporting our integrated M.Tech-Ph.D programme and we plan to rope in more support soon," he added. The university has approached close to 100 prospective industry partners and is awaiting their response, he said. Asked whether the new course has been approved by the university's academic council, Gade said that the faculty of technology is meeting on July 23 to finalise various details of the course. "The V-C has special powers to introduce such course and get the same approved later by the academic council," he added.
