The model developed by the Education and Extension department of the University of Pune has helped 16 of its students clear the National Eligibility Test (NET) and 135 pass the State Eligibility Test (SET) in the last five years. The success is phenomenal considering the national pass percentage of NET/SET which is hardly 1%. The department offers one-year Masters in Education (M.Ed) degree.
The University gave us the liberty to mould the syllabus of our degree programme and so we decided that students passing out of our department should be trained to attempt both the exams. So we decided to incorporate the NET and SET syllabus in the degree programme, said Sanjeev Sonawane, head of the Education and Extension department. The department implemented the model in stages during the five years starting with adopting the new curriculum first. This took care of the second and the third papers in NET and SET. However, the first paper which is mostly related to general knowledge and capability test was not covered in the degree syllabus. So, we decided to conduct Saturday classes for students wherein experts from various fields shared their knowledge and thought son current issues, Sonawane said. The department also conducts a workshop just three weeks before the examination. Besides, experts discuss probable questions with students to boost their confidence. In the forthcoming academic year, the department also plans to change the answering pattern of their M.Ed examination. In NET/SET, there is a particular of answering questions. There is a set limitation of words, space and even marks. The students will have to answer the M.Ed examination in the similar fashion, said Sonawane.
