HSC students misuse rule

Higher secondary school certificate (HSC) students are forsaking "difficult" subjects for easier options so that they can bag a higher score in the board exams. On their part, college principals seem frustrated with the latest antic.

HSC students misuse rule

Many students have applied for a switch in their academic subjects like maths, biology and other theory-based subjects to opt for subjects from other streams, such as economics and history, while appearing for their HSC board exams.
The trend is the strongest among science students who do not want to pursue engineering but are interested in medicine or management in the future.
College principals say that students are misusing the HSC board rule which allows students to choose non-practical subjects from other streams if they find they are unable to cope with subjects from their stream.

"The board had introduced this rule to help students who are weak in their studies or suffer from physical or mental disabilities. But we see most of the students are trying to benefit from it to score more marks," said Tushar Desai, principal, DG Ruparel College, Matunga.
A senior official from the state board said that the rule was created for emergency situations only. "We are getting many forms requesting change of subjects. It is a disturbing trend. Coaching classes seem to be encouraging it in many cases."
