Management education for student
306 views

Why are so many graduates invariably pursuing management studies? Management education helps in larger roles. For example, a not-for-profit company may begin without an aggressive profit making strategy, but they need to be able to sustain themselves simply because of the environment. It will be subject to the pulls and pushes of the market all the same. Every person has the potential, and management studies make it possible to convert that potential. It is in a sense inevitable because as you grow in your filed, you will need to eventually have to manage the resources at your disposal. The GMAT remains an expensive test for most, and beyond the reach of a number of aspirants.

The GMAT is a test on demand. The infrastructure for the exam needs to be maintained all-year-round and be available whenever a candidate needs to take it. It is the same rate across the world, subject to the same levels of high security. It is a global product with global standards. To keep it accessible to students, its cost has remained the same for the last eight years.

How much does a good GMAT score help one’s chance of admission?
The cut-offs for admissions are fluid and your experience and profile also count. A good Statement of Purpose works well. Most B-schools want diversity in their classes. A 'cookie-cut' profile stands out less than someone with a background in, say-a creative field or work experience in atypical fields. A well-rounded profile with good extra curricular activities is important. Also, good b-schools want people from different contexts who can bring more to the class and the overall learning; they usually have students of 30-40 nationalities.

With India having close to 3000 schools offering management studies, how important is it to get into the top B-schools?
GMAC works closely only with the top schools in the world. In India, the top 50 schools are among the best in the world and offer global conditions for study, the next 50 aspire to be on par with the top 50. The next best hundred schools aim to do as well as the top hundred, have the right approach and want to impart quality education. So the top 200 B schools in the country will definitely be able to provide a good degree to their student, who can be assured of a return on their investment.

What should a student look for in a B-school?
Continuing education will become a big thing in the future, education will become a continuous process, and you will need to rescale continuously to be at the peak of your learning. Therefore it is important for a student to choose the right programme and the right B-school. A good programme needs to teach you what is current in terms of the curriculum, pedagogy and resources. The faculty must be world-class, for which a good benchmark would be the research they are currently engaged in.

Does the country need so many managers?
The demand for managers in a growing economy is high. Take for instance the way the healthcare or the insurance industries have shaped up. Previously, doctors ran hospitals taking care of the administration as well as treatments. Now, managers run the hospital leaving the doctors free to do what they do best. A management degree is domain independent. It can sit atop any functional degree adding skills to take you further along in your job.
