While Indians still swear by engineering and medicine the fact is that some universities, foundations and institutes have gone beyond the usual and offer exciting and novel courses. Some do not require any specific qualifications, while a few are for working professionals. Here's a peek into a few:
Urban DevelopmentThe Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), Bangalore, recently announced the launch of India's first interdisciplinary, full-time, practice based Programme for Working Professionals in Urban Development (PWP-UD). What's the need for such a course Experts at the institute believe that the 21st Century is a global urban century. India's own urban transition is expected to add 300 million more urban residents by 2050, a huge challenge. This challenge, they say, can only be met by a new generation of urban practitioners with the right tools, perspectives and knowledge.Hence, it’s Program for Working Professionals in Urban Development (PWP-UD), a fulltime, eight-month Certificate Program intended for early and mid-career working professionals who want to augment their competencies and professional worth, or add significant value to or change their career tracks. The PWP-UD 2012-13 will run from October, 2012 to June, 2013. C.B.Bhave, Executive Chairperson, IIHS said at the launch, "It is estimated that over the next 50 years India's urban population will increase by over 300 million. This will put pressure on the existing cities to transform into quality living and working spaces. We need a sufficient number of well educated professionals who can play the role of change makers and entrepreneurs." Applicants must have: A bachelor's degree (in any discipline) with at least three years of work experience; or a master's degree (in any discipline) with at least two years of work experience; or a PhD or be a doctoral candidate with research and teaching experience directly relevant or applicable to urban issues.
