Four engineering students (Information Science) have developed 'Gestify' - a gesture recognition application for Android phones. It helps people who are new to the Android plat form by reducing the tasks by at least two to three steps. Developed by Divya Nayak, Gaurav Prakash, Samith Bangera and Kavana Hegde from NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, near Mangalore, the application creates a software package that recognises a set of touch gestures on the phone - a kind of sign language.
Gaurav said, Android is the hot favourite among smart phone operating systems. The basic features of the application are adding, editing and deleting gestures. Our software captures the pattern of the finger movements, recognizes the instruction and send sit to the Android application, which in turn issues commands to the currently running application. According to Samith, the outcome would be a more user-friendly mobile interface for all age groups. At present, the gesture recognition applications available are mainly touch-based-the user has to make a direct contact with the interface. Other than developing an application to recognise 3-D movements, we aim at facilitating faster execution of the applications currently available. With advancements in processor technology, the applications will give faster response with improved accuracy. We hope to launch the application commercially by the end of the year, said Divya. Vasudev Pai, lecturer in the department of information science and engineering, guided the students in their project. Modus Operandi: Once the application is installed in the phone, from the home screen, the user will be able to view all the gestures already assigned to various applications and contacts and add new ones. When a gesture is made, the application or contact option it is assigned to opens. In the case of an application, it starts running and in the case of a contact name, call, message and email options pop up.
