Girls make MBA choice earlier than boys
184 views

At IIM Bangalore (IIM-B), of the 382 students admitted into the 2013 postgraduate programme, only 85 are girls. But even within this relatively small group, a difference is immediately discernable between the sexes, the age factor. While the women students fall into the average age group of 20-28 years, the boys are restricted to the age group of 21-34 years. While figures vary from institute to institute, the trend remains the same.

Girls make MBA choice earlier than boys

Prof Bringi Deo, in-charge of the placement-cell of IIM-B, said, “Most girls join a management course soon after graduation or within a year, while most boys come after 3-4 years of work experience.” Prof Suresh Ghai, director of Somaiya Institute of Management, agreed. “Boys feel that work experience is important before an MBA while girls think otherwise. That’s why we get younger girls every year.” Peer pressure also contributes to this trend among men.

An IIM-Indore student who has five years of work experience, said, “All my friends got a job after BE. Also, I was not comfortable asking my parents for a huge sum for an MBA after finishing graduation. So I took my time. I eventually decided to appear for CAT and it then took me three years to qualify.” Among the girls, the MBA bug seems to bite right after graduation and most are able to bag a seat in their first attempt. Vinaya Waghmode, 22, said, “During my third year, I felt I had good experience with managing college festivals, so the management field seemed right for me,” she said.

Dr. Alka Subramaniyam, professor of psychiatry at Topiwala Medical College and Nair Hospital attributes the trend to evolutionary patterns. “Men, as breadwinners, have been hunters since the beginning. So they experiment a lot before settling into a career. Women were limited to the home till recently. So, experimentation among them is still low. Moreover, most women don’t feel the pressure to earn so they go ahead with further studies.”
