Candidates who want to take the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) are a worried lot as the online link to the application form, which opened on September 12, has been dysfunctional for the last five days, even as the last date for application is October 17.
Some of the candidates told TOI that repeated mails and calls to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, which has organised the exam, have remained unanswered. Phone calls and emails to IIT-Delhi and IIT Mumbai by TOI also proved futile. Some of the candidates have been preparing for the prestigious test for about two years to seek admission to the Masters in Technology (M.Tech) course at IITs. "I have been trying to open the link daily, but in vain. The deadline is very close and no action has been taken yet," Rajesh Yadav, who has been preparing for the test for almost two years, told TOI. Another IIT aspirant, Anurag Bajpai, said he sent several mails to the IIT mail IDs as given in the GATE website, but did not receive a single reply. "If I am unable to apply for the exam, I will lose a year." Jayashree Yadav, who is also aspiring for an M.Tech seat, said the link opened on September 12, but for financial transactions it is mandatory to open an account in the State Bank of India. "I did not have an account in that bank, so my procedure started from thereon. It took time to open an account. Now that I have an account with SBI, the link to the admission form does not open." While the online exam is scheduled for January 29, 2012, the offline exam will be held on February 12 next year. GATE is jointly administered and conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Admissions to the M.Tech course will be giving from March 15 to July next year. The GATE results will be announced on March 15, 2012.
