Gone are the days when teachers would go home with bundles of answer sheets to be corrected and get busy in filing report cards. An emerging trend in schools and colleges is outsourcing exams to professional companies. Two weeks ago, K. C. college conducted its first such exam for F.Y.B.Com students. Other reputed city colleges are following suit. While continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE) in schools and credit system in degree colleges has been implemented, the number of internal assessments has increased. Hence, educational institutes are bringing in professional agencies.

They prepare the test modules with the help of teachers, conduct the tests based on technology and provide schools with an elaborate evaluation report to help teachers understand which student needs more attention and in which area. Dr. Manju Nichani, KC college principal, said, "Technology is the way forward. The newly introduced credit system, which requires continuous evaluation, is not possible without it. However, it is in the trial-and-error stage as of now. We recently conducted one such test and received positive feedback from students as well as teachers. The system adds to the speed of evaluation." For the test at KC college, students were given a time limit for each question depending on its difficulty level.

Once the time for a particular question was over, they were not allowed to go back to it. Individual results were announced soon after and added to students' individual credits. Snehal Pinto from Ryan International Schools, said, “This pattern allows the teachers to engage themselves in the process of designing assessment catering to different learning needs. Besides the tests, the metrics given to students and teachers are helpful in monitoring teaching and learning outcomes.” Go to test is the agency working at Ryan International School for technology-based testing and evaluation. Sudhir Menon, agency’s MD & CEO, said, “Go to test is like a helping hand for educational institutes to create, conduct and administer internal assessments as per prescribed schedules and curriculum.

After the test is conducted, reports are generated and customised to the needs of different stakeholders: teachers, institutes, students and parents.” Menon added, “We are aware of the poor teacher-student ratio. With a teacher having to cater to a class of 70-80 students, subjective evaluation of all is a big task, which is the demand of CCE and credit system. Such systems help teachers concentrate more efficiently on teaching.” However, it is not proving to be easy for all to give up the age-old method of conducting exams. Madhavi Pethe, Dahanukar College principal, said, “I have been approached by many companies to start such a system. However, it requires major technological support. It will take time to embrace this concept.”
