In a bid to encourage more girls to appear in IITs joint entrance examination (JEE), the IIT joint admission board has decided to waive off their application fee from next year.
However, the application fee for boys would be raised from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,800. From 2012, applicants would also be allowed to carry a copy of optical response sheet, on which answers are inscribed immediately after the examination. Also, answers can be circled by pen, instead of pencil as is the norm now. These decisions were taken on Friday by the admission board. Next year JEE would be conducted by IIT Delhi. IITs have initiated reforms in small measures from last year. For instance, answers were put out by the admission board before the results came out. However, it was done 35 days after the test. Also, the scanned copies of optical response sheet of candidates were put on the admission board’s website after the results were published. Though a PIL by one Rajeev Kumar of IIT-Kharagpur seeking reforms in IITs was dismissed by the Delhi High Court, the Supreme Court has set aside the order and the matter has since then gone back to the Delhi HC.
