Continuing with its emphasis on women students, IIM-Kozhikode for the second year has given admission to more than 33% women students in the prestigious post-graduate program.
Out of total admission to 344 students, 115 are women. Out of the women admitted, 80 have Common Admission Test percentile between 90 and 100. Institute director Debashis Chatterjee says, giving prominence to girl students has become a trend in IIM-Kozhikode. Last year also we had the maximum number of women students among all IIMs. He says girls have always performed better than boys. Even in summer placement girls have been placed in better companies. This is all on merit, he says. Barely 14 years-old, IIM-Kozhikode has also been invited by new Kerala government to conduct a day-long leadership programme for the entire cabinet. Out of 115 women students, 88 have engineering background while 14 are either commerce or economics graduate. Three women are doctors and one did graduation in law. Not a single male student is either from law or medical background. Chatterjee says there has also been a change in income profile of parents of students coming to IIM-Kozhikode. Though this could be a trend among all IIMs, in Kozhikode 8.11% students have parents whose income is less than Rs. 1 lakh per annum. Nearly 28% students have parents earning Rs. 10 lakh and above. Rest of the students have parents earning Rs. 4-5 lakh per annum (10.81%) and Rs. 5-6 lakh per annum (13.51%). In IIM-Kozhikode, a majority of students 62.96% have parents working either in government, PSUs or NGOs. Only 13.89% students are children of professionals or private sector executives. Children of businessmen comprise 12.04% of total students in the institute. Maximum students (11.92%) are from Maharashtra followed by 11.63% from Delhi. Students from Uttar Pradesh have fared very well and comprise 10.47% of its total strength.
