Three students from the city have figured in the Top 100 all-India rankings of the Indian Institute of Technology joint entrance examination (IIT-JEE). The results of the national-level examination, which opens doors to some of the country's most coveted engineering institutes, were declared on Wednesday. Close to 200 students from the city have cleared the exam, according to data from various tutorials that coach students for the examination across the city. Last year, 150 students had cleared it.
The best ranking from the city, 53rd at the all-India level, was secured by Rohan Prinja. Soham Phade (all-India rank 65) and Sarthak Chandra (all-India rank 86) were the other students who made it to the top. IIT-Kanpur was the nodal agency that conducted the 2011 examinations. A total of 4,68,240 candidates had appeared in the examination held on April 10, 2010. The JEE is widely regarded as the toughest entrance test for technology courses. Those clearing the exam will enter one of the 16 IITs and the Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad. Over 4,000 students had enrolled for the examination from the city. Besides Rohan, eight other students showed up in the top-1,000 rankings from the Bakliwal tutorials, while 43 students secured rankings beyond top-1,000. From the M Prakash Academy, 83 students enrolled and 45 students, all first-timers, secured ranks. The IIT Prashikshan Kendras tally of 39 IIT ranks included four girls. Of the 39 students, 32 are first attempters and seven are repeaters. Of the 39 successful students, eight are in the top 1,000 ranks. Parth Bhattacharya achieved the best rank for IIT-P with all-India rank 196. Director Durgesh Mangeshkar said IIT-P has been meting out a well-structured and systematically executed programme such as tri-stream grandmaster programme, which comprises teaching, testing and counseling. This system has helped us deliver good results. We are glad that 85% of IIT ranks from our institute are first attempters, unlike the trend in Kota and Hyderabad where repeaters dominate the ranks, Mangeshkar said. At the Prime Academy, 15 students made it to the top-1,000 standings and Prasanna Rawake achieved the best showing for Prime with all-India rank 244. A total of 51 students from the 139 enrolled, made it to the IIT-JEE. The D G Foundation saw seven students make it to the IIT-JEE and Sarthak secured the best rank for the Foundation with all-India rank 86. The admissions for the 9,600 seats offered by the IITs will be held in two rounds. The first list of seat allotment will be uploaded on IIT-Kanpur's website on June 21, whereas the second list will be issued on July 6.
