The NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) will evolve a new methodology for providing accreditation to colleges by March 2012. Disclosing this at the 3rd accreditation award ceremony of NAAC held in Bangalore on 24 April, Prof Goverdhan Mehta, chairman, executive committee, NAAC, said that an exclusive website had been created to receive feedback from institutions in this regard. Over 100 colleges and universities from across the country received their accreditation at the function.
Elaborating on the concept of quality, Prof Mehta pointed out that quality was an internal matter and the primary responsibility of institutions was to provide external attributes for developing these internal qualities. University Grants Commission chairman Prof Ved Prakash, who spoke on the occasion, said that if quality had to be maintained in education, children should not only be provided means for their natural development but also be given all facilities to achieve their career aspirations.
"India has the largest system of higher education but its gross enrolment ratio is low. We have a long distance to go to gain world class recognition," he said. Observing that huge investment and dedication were needed to set up any institution of repute, he said educational institutions were accountable for three things: fulfiling the needs of the society, using public resources in a responsible manner and maintaining standards of excellence in learning and discovery.
"We want places where scientific advancement takes place and which redefine the needs of education. We need to process the right kind of raw material," Prof Prakash said. "Any kind of investment on education is justifiable. We need to have a harmonious coexistence of public and private partnership," he said. Prof Prakash pointed out that the purpose of NAAC was to help the nation know its strengths so it could build on them and identify its shortcomings so that investments could be made to better them.
