With an aim at making Chennai the research capital of India, over 60 educational and scientific institutes in the city, including the Anna University, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras and the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Center are joining hands to set up a mega science city on the lines of the Tokyo Science City and help students of these institutes undertake world class research by sharing their resources. According to a senior higher education department official, the state government has constituted a committee with former Anna University vice-chancellor Prof V. C. Kulandaiswamy as the chairman, Madras University vice-chancellor Prof G. Thiruvasagam, Anna University V-C Prof. P. Mannar Jawahar, commissioner of technical education Mr. Kumar Jayanth and others as members.
The committee held its second meeting on 18th April to discuss the modalities of setting up the mega science city in 25 acres of land in Chennai. About 69 educational and research institutes including the Anna University, IIT Madras and the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology centre will be roped in.
"These institutions will share their resources to help students do world-class research. Most of the equipments used for research are expensive and not all institutes can afford them so all these institutions will share their research infrastructure to make Chennai the research hub of India," the senior official said. The official pointing out that all educational and research institutes would showcase their research findings in the proposed mega science city.
"There was a time when the Madras University produced Nobel laureates like Sir C. V. Raman but today India as a country is not able to produce even one Nobel laureate from its institutions. So we are attempting to create a facility for scientists to do world class research," the official said.
