Those who feel that the level of education in Bengal has deteriorated have to do
a rethink.
Top institutions from across the country continue to attract
quality students from the state in general and Kolkata in particular.
Days after professor Sree Sreenivasan from Columbia Journalism School complemented
the education system for churning out students, Indian School of Business (ISB)
director (admissions and financial aid) AM Kannan said, Academic institutes in Bengal
like Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur, Bengal Engineering & Science University,
University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University, National Institute of Technology-Durgapur,
Presidency University and St Xaviers College have been consistently providing a
pool of quality students for Bschools like ISB. He added, the presence of Wipro,
TCS and other leading IT companies in Kolkata has also made it an attractive market
for the
MBA executive programme.
Applications to the Hyderabad management school from Kolkata have doubled in the
past five years and admission has tripled during this period. While the premier
Bschool had only 9 students from the city in 2006, it admitted 24 students last
year. Interests have gone up in the last five years making Kolkata an interesting
market, remarked Kannan.
Some of the best minds from the city make up the alumni of ISB. Vijay Dalmia, a
city based business man studied at the management school. My experience at ISB has
been phenomenal making me fit to face any situation. Kolkata provided for a humble
upbringing and education helping me to connect with ground realities.
It is ranked among the top 20 in the global B-school ranking by the Financial Times,
London. ISB in its tenth year collaborated with top Asian B-schools to form the
Top 4 Asia B-schools with the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, China
Europe International Business School, and Nanyang Technological University.
