Various design institutes across the country, including like Indian Institutes of
Technology (IITs), took part in the competition
Futuristic designs for commuting conceived by students of
the National Institute of Design (NID) will be featured at the Auto Expo 2012 at
Delhi, beginning January 7.
Concepts based on green mobility for India including a single-wheeled transportation
device designed by C. R. Anand, a two wheeled vehicle designed by Sudhir Dombale and
a three-seater vehicle designed by Prathyush Devadas have been selected through
a competition as part of the Auto Expo. The competition called national automotive
design challenge is organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers
(SIAM), an apex industry body representing various leading vehicle and vehicular
engine manufacturers in India.
Various design institutes across the country, including like Indian Institutes of
Technology (IITs), took part in the competition. The competition began around August
2010. Apart from the three designs from NID, 10 designs were selected from other
institutes. Three final winners will be selected following a presentation by the
students at the Auto Expo on January 7.
The designs have been conceptualized to run on rechargeable batteries or solar power.
Dombale said, When we design a concept, we mostly use latest technologies until
and unless we are given a nearby target year. The internal combustion engines which
were invented around a hundred years back are still relevant today. So we have to
look far into the future while developing a concept so that the concept remains
relevant by the time the actual version is developed.
